BUJUMBURA January 29th (ABP) – The Umuco Mass Choir Event Association orgnized in Bujumbura on Saturday January 26, 2019, a competition of choirs from Protestant churches of Bujumbura City Council as part of the semifinal of choirs producing gospel songs. Fifteen choirs were competing to finally stay with ten that will qualify for the final.
According to Umuco Mass Choir Event Chair Teddy Harushimana, the aim of that competition is to support the works of the choristers because, according to him, there is no platform in Burundi for singers in the churches, hence there are no competitions organized for them. In addition, he lamented, the level of the gospel song leaves something to be desired.
It is in that sense that the idea of mobilizing members of the different choirs to know each other and promote their churches was born, he said, adding that it is also to award the best choirs and help the Burundian people be in joy because of their songs
According to Harushimana, music plays a major role in social cohesion because the message conveyed by those choirs helps pacify the country.
Mr. Harushimana indicated that the jury had proposed four criteria to compete. The choir had to be made up of 25 people and be recognized by the church it represents. The other criterion was to see the talents of the choristers at the voice and musical level, as well as the number of people who accompanied the choir to support it.
Note that the competition, which began on December 1, 2018, will end on Saturday February 2, 2019, Teddy Harushimana said.
