BUBANZA May 17th (ABP) – Witchcraft charges are on a worrisome trend in these days in some localities of Bubanza province (northwestern Burundi), as disclosed during the security meeting held in Gihanga commune on Tuesday May 14, 2019 by the governor of Bubanza, Mr. Nobus Terence Butoyi.
Within a week or less, allegations of witchcraft were reported in Bubanza commune, Muhanza village, where three people risked to be killed by their neighbors who accused them of witchcraft. The three victims are currently in the hands of the judicial police of Bubanza for investigation and also for their protection. In the same village, two houses belonging to people accused of witchcraft were burned.
In Musigati commune, Muyebe zone, members of 12 families accuse their neighbors of bewitching their 56 children who are currently ill. In the same commune, those kinds of allegations are reported in the Rushiha and Busiga villages where an old woman is under threat of death.
In the Rugazi commune, another old woman, accused of witchcraft, was beaten to death by her neighbor, according to communal administrative source.
Governor Butoyi warns those who arrogate to themselves the right to accuse others of witchcraft.
