KAYANZA May 17th (ABP) – The Minister of the Environment, Agriculture and Livestock, Mr. Déo Guide Rureme, called on people of Kayanza province (northern Burundi) on Friday May 15, 2019 to protect the environment by drawing counter lines and anti-erosion hedges. He also asked them to make the commitment to participate massively in the works organized every Thursday for the implementation of Thursday dedicated to the protection of the environment; this was disclosed during the launch of the works of developing the Ruvubu hydro-agricultural marsh coupled with the start of construction works for the bridge connecting the Butaganzwa and Muhanga communes.
According to Minister Rurema, two ministerial ordinances were set up in his ministry, one dealing with the destruction of eucalyptus plantations and other trees absorbing a lot of water in the swamps, shallows and water sources and streams; and the other on the fixing of the environmental Thursday.
However, the Minister in charge of the Environment recalled that Burundi has about 25000 water sources of which about 5000, or 10%, have completely dried up. To that end, he invited the people of Kayanza province to draw contour lines for the infiltration of rainwater because, he said, more than 200 water sources in Kayanza province, or 17% of the water sources in that province, suffered the same fate.
