GITEGA October 2nd (ABP) – The President of the Republic of Burundi, Mr. Evariste Ndayishimiye with his wife, Mrs. Angéline Ndayishimiye, on Thursday morning laid the foundation stone for the extension work of the Urumuri treatment and intake center in charge of obstetric fistulas at the regional hospital of the political capital of Burundi in Gitega.
Funding for that construction work is provided by the Good Action Foundation.
During those ceremonies which were enhanced by many distinguished guests, the presidential couple successively cut the symbolic ribbon, listened to the explanation of the construction diagram, discovered the construction plate and when the first stone is laid.
That Urumuri Center, operational at the regional hospital of Gitega since 2010, has already treated several women who suffered from obstetric fistulas. They recovered and resumed normal activities.
That center has 38 cases of fistulas operated since August 2020 during the campaign organized by the NGO Bonne Action, said the head of that center, Dr. Célestin Sakubu.
He added that the Urumuri center is the only referral structure for the treatment of obstetric fistulas at the national level.
