MAKAMBA May 7th (ABP) – The Minister of Education, Technical and Vocational Training (MEFTP), Ms. Janvière Ndirahisha, launched on Friday May 3, 2019 the cultural competitions in the basic schools under the theme “Young people, let us consolidate the mores and the culture of our ancestors, which constitute the base of the sustainable development”.

In her speech, Minister Ndirahisha indicated that the government through the MEFTP wants to consolidate the mores and culture of Burundi, starting with the children of the basic school. She added that nowadays we see children who are content to copy the foreign culture via social media and television.

She asked the teachers as well as the parents to teach their children the culture and the national language (Kirundi) from an early age. Ndirahisha said those cultural competitions will continue in all provinces and at the national level.

They are organized in different disciplines namely: reading and writing of Kirundi, skits, traditional dances, making balls, football and games of bravery such as throwing the arrows by bows made by children.

The first three of each branch received prizes, including loincloths, soap and an envelope containing money for the girls, while the boys received an envelope of money and soap.
