In his opening speech, the Burundi Ombudsman, Mr. Edouard Nduwimana said that the main objective of that meeting is to contribute to the consolidation of peace and social cohesion, through impeccable justice, “a sine qua non condition” for both economic and social development, adding that this objective cannot be achieved if the actors of the judicial system are not aware of their mission and its impact on harmony social and peace, or if they dare not indulge in an exercise in introspection and autoscopy, with a view to capitalizing on good practices and reducing shortcomings.

According to the inspector at the ministry in charge of justice, Mr. Ernest Nyabenda, for the magistrates to play their role effectively, they must make fair trials. In fulfilling his mission to provide justice, Mr. Nyabenda said that the magistrate must respect the law, and that the only guide for the judge to render fair judgments is respect for the law, as adopted by the competent body. In short, he said, the magistrate must be honest, avoiding corruption and other related offenses.

Also in the context of peacebuilding, the institution of the Burundi Ombudsman organized a football match between two teams from the town of Kirundo namely Kirundo United and Kirundo City, after which Kirundo City beat Kirundo United with a score of two goals to zero.
